Dallas Opera co-founder Rescigno dies in Italy

Nicola Rescigno, the cofounder of the Dallas Opera and one of Maria Callas' favourite conductors, has died at a hospital in Italy, officials said Tuesday. He was 92.
Rescigno died Monday of complications following spirit failure and breathing problems, said Corrado Ricci, a doctor at the Belcolle hospital in Viterbo, a town about 50 miles north of Rome. Rescigno had been admitted on July 30 with a broken femoris, following a fall. But Ricci aforesaid that at that point, he was already in serious condition.
Jonathan Pell, the Dallas Opera director of artistic administration, said he received a call Monday afternoon from Rescigno's nephew, who had been informed of his uncle's death by the hospital.
Pell said Rescigno "went to sleep and didn't wake up."
The New York-born Rescigno stirred to music after a receiving a law arcdegree at Rome's La Sapienza university. His career was largely spent in the United States.
He conducted Callas' debut in America, eventually becoming one of the star soprano's favorite conductors throughout a cooperation that spanned several years, performances and recordings.
"He knew how to make for together orchestra and vocalizing, doing everything possible to bring out the best singing performance," said Elvio Giudici, a leading opera house critic. "It is not by chance that he worked with Callas when she had her lowly vocal problems."
Rescigno and the late Lawrence V. Kelly founded the Dallas Opera in 1957, with Rescigno taking the job of artistic director.
According to the theater's Web site, the theater open with a concert by Callas in November of that year.
After Kelly's death in 1974, Rescigno took on the role of general director as well.
Rescigno was as well a cofounder of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and conducted at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera and Vienna State Opera. His recordings include recitals with Callas and Luciano Pavarotti.
During his career, Rescigno also toured some of the most important opera theaters in Italy, including Rome's Opera House, the San Carlo in Naples and La Fenice in Venice.
"He was of the old school. He knew the repertory backwards," aforesaid Giudici. "He could figure out any trouble because he knew the subject actually well."
"Adjust the sound, the orchestra, the timing, the dynamics to the atmospheric condition of whatever given night: this is something that old-time directors could do really well," said Giudici.

Amy Winehouse has responded to rumours that she was involved in a fight last week, saying her bruised and swollen face is down to a mystery skin infection.
The singer was photographed on Friday with a painful-looking swelling on the side of her face, prompting speculation that she had been hit.
However her spokesman insists the singer has come down with a mystery illness and is seeking medical help.
He told the Daily Star: "Amy has a skin infection which is why her face looks the way it does. At this stage she has no idea what it is but she's getting to a doctor to try and identify the problem.
"She's not in any pain but, obviously, she wants to get it sorted as soon as possible."

The investment firm Colony Capital is discussing with Jackson various repayment options for the $23 million debt, including a possible long-term engagement as the resident performer of a Vegas casino or nightclub, a source familiar with the talks said on Friday.
Colony Capital, based in Los Angeles, owns the Las Vegas Hilton and is a major shareholder in the Station Casinos chain.
The source emphasized that no deal was in place and that a Las Vegas gig for Jackson was merely one idea under consideration as Colony Capital explores the question of the loan repayment with him.
The talks with Jackson were first reported by the Wall Street Journal, which quoted Colony Capital CEO Tom Barrack as saying, "we've been having discussions with Mr. Jackson about a recapitalization and refinancing of Neverland in addition to various other business opportunities and mutual interests."
A Colony Capital spokesman told Reuters the company was not commenting further on the matter. Jackson's personal spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment.
Bringing Jackson to Sin City as a performer would mark the biggest step the 49-year-old performer has taken toward a comeback since a child molestation trial left his career, his reputation and financial status in tatters three years ago.

She explains, " We thought it was going to be a formal affair like a cocktail party, so we were all very elegantly dresses in fur coats, gloves and hats. As soon as we got there, we realised it wasn't formal at all. There were just a load of people milling around and standing in corners, so we left pretty quickly.
"Later, George Harrison said, 'We expected these three black girls to be hip but they came in looking like Jackie Onassis.'"

Russell Brand won his first Gold award at the radio industry "Oscars" last night.
Brand, who launched his Saturday late-night Radio 2 show in 2006, picked up the Entertainment Award at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.
Meanwhile Radio 1's Chris Moyles won a Sony Gold for best Breakfast Show and Jonathan Ross on Radio 2 won the Music Radio Personality Award.

Queen guitarist Brian May has said he is involved in a "rescue operation" to save the GCap Media station.
Jenny Abramsky, who is stepping down as director of audio and music at the BBC to chair the Heritage Lottery Fund, won the Special Award.
British broadcaster Brian Matthew won The Gold Award for "an impressive record of more than 50 years of national and international radio broadcasting".
BBC 6 Music's George Lamb was awarded Rising Star award, beating Kelly Osbourne on Radio 1.
